Why I Spent 9 Months on a Matchstick Titanic (and Why You Might Want To)

Quick crafts are fine. But after 200 hours gluing toothpicks, I found the real payoff isn't the finished model. Here's what the research says about long projects—and how to pick one that sticks.

Three months in, you've got 20,000 toothpicks glued and the hull is finally curving the way it's supposed to. A little voice says, Why not just buy a kit? Or take up knitting? Then you look at the plans, feel the pull of the next step, and realize you're not doing this for the finished boat. You're doing it for the 200 hours of absorbed attention. That's the moment I want to make the case for long projects.

But first, a confession: I'm not naturally a long-project person. I've started—and abandoned—more hobbies than I can count. So when I say long projects are worth it, I'm speaking as someone who had to be convinced.

So do long, time-consuming projects deliver more wellbeing than quick, easily finished hobbies? After digging through the research, my answer is yes—with caveats. And I'll tell you how to choose one that won't end up in a dusty pile.

Why the clock matters

Most hobby advice focuses on the activity itself—knitting, gardening, chess. But how long you engage matters as much as what you engage with. Consider the jigsaw puzzle study from Ulm University. They had 100 healthy adults aged 50 and older puzzle for at least an hour a day for 30 days. Those folks connected an average of 3,589 pieces over 49 hours. Their puzzle skill improved. But their global visuospatial cognition didn't budge. However, lifetime puzzling experience was linked to better visuospatial cognition, even after controlling for other factors (Fissler et al., Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience, 2018).

Read that again. Thirty days of intense puzzling didn't move the needle on cognition; years of it did. Quick projects can be satisfying, but the deep, lasting benefits seem to require a longer horizon. Same pattern in music: a study of over 10,800 adults aged 70 and older found that those who played an instrument at least weekly had a 35% lower risk of developing dementia over seven years (Harvard Health, International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, 2025). That's not a one-month challenge; that's a life habit.

I'm not saying short projects are worthless. A weekend of origami can reduce math anxiety in kids (Ridgley et al., Frontiers in Education, 2025). But if you're chasing deeper payoffs—purpose, mastery, cognitive protection—think months and years, not afternoons.

Mastery, flow, and the 10,000-hour myth

Why do long projects pay off more? Two words: mastery and flow. A study of 7,000+ people by Dr. Helen Keyes found that arts and crafts were associated with higher happiness, life satisfaction, and a sense of purpose—and that the effect on feeling life is worthwhile was bigger than the effect of being employed (Keyes et al., Frontiers in Public Health). The researchers attributed this to mastery and flow.

Flow—that state of complete absorption where time vanishes—is more likely when challenge and skill are both high and matched (PositivePsychology.com). Long projects are a natural flow generator because they constantly present new challenges: the next tricky joint, the next color change, the next layer of glaze. A daily diary study of 975 hobby musicians found that flow mediated the link between daily motivation and life satisfaction (Koehler et al., Psychology of Aesthetics, 2023). And high-skill activities, where ability grows with practice, contribute more to wellbeing than low-skill ones (Alberhasky & Raghunathan, Psychology & Marketing, 2023).

Now, the 10,000-hour rule. You've heard it: Gladwell popularized the idea that 10,000 hours of practice yields expertise. But Ericsson himself disputed that, noting it was an average, not a threshold, and that deliberate practice—focused effort beyond your comfort zone—was the real driver (BBC News). A 2014 study led by David Hambrick found deliberate practice explained only 34% of variance in chess ability and 30% in music performance, with grandmasters ranging from 832 to 24,284 hours (BBC News).

So don't obsess over hitting some magic number. The value isn't in the hours logged; it's in the quality of engagement. A long project gives you a structured arena for deliberate practice—if you approach it right. If you just repeat what you already do well, you'll plateau. If you constantly push into new territory, the project keeps rewarding you.

What long projects do to your brain and mood

Let's get concrete. A British matchstick modeler used about 40,000 matchsticks per vessel and roughly 9 months per build. His largest model, the Titanic, measured just under 5 feet (BBC News). That's a lot of glue and patience. But the payoff isn't just a cool model. Time-consuming crafts like woodworking and model shipbuilding require patience, intense focus, steady hands, and precision—and act as a form of meditation and cognitive training that sharpens focus and problem-solving (Keyes et al.). Deep-focus crafts can even lift people out of depression and provide a renewed sense of purpose from completing challenging long-term projects (Keyes et al.).

The cognitive evidence is striking. In a 2015 Neurology study of 256 people with an average age of 87, those who engaged in crafts like woodworking, pottery, quilting, and sewing in middle and old age were 45% less likely to develop mild cognitive impairment; those who did arts like painting and sculpting were 73% less likely (Mayo Clinic / AAN press release). That's not a small effect. And it's not about quick wins; it's about sustained engagement over decades.

Other long-form hobbies show similar patterns. Gardening, for instance, reduced stress and anxiety in a randomized trial of 291 adults (Litt et al., The Lancet Planetary Health, 2023). Pottery, according to Oxford research, supports both hedonic wellbeing (meditative engagement with clay) and eudemonic wellbeing (fulfilment and flourishing)—but it also requires emotional resilience when your piece collapses on the wheel (Oxford School of Archaeology). That resilience is built over many failed attempts, not one.

Even activities that seem passive, like reading, show dose-response benefits. A Yale analysis found that reading books for up to 3.5 hours a week was associated with a 17% lower risk of death, and more than 3.5 hours a week with a 23% lower risk, compared with non-readers (Bavishi, Slade & Levy, Social Science & Medicine, 2016). That's a long-term habit paying off in years of life.

How to choose a long project that won't fizzle

Not all long projects are created equal. The research points to a few ingredients that make the difference between a fulfilling multi-month endeavor and a dusty pile of unfinished supplies.

  • High skill ceiling: Pick something where your ability can keep growing. High-skill activities contribute more to wellbeing than low-skill ones (Alberhasky & Raghunathan). If you can master it in a weekend, it won't sustain flow for months.
  • Clear feedback and challenge: Flow requires a balance between challenge and skill (PositivePsychology.com). A good long project gives you immediate feedback—a seam that lies flat, a joint that holds—so you can adjust and stay in the zone.
  • Personal meaning: The Keyes study found that crafting's effect on life worthwhileness exceeded that of employment. Choose a project that connects to something you care about, whether it's a gift for a grandchild or a replica of a historic ship.

One caution: don't confuse duration with drudgery. The Health and Retirement Study found that weekly hobbies reduced depression odds by about 19%, but writing, reading, and sewing-type activities were not consistently associated with lower depression—researchers suggested the social element might be key (Health and Retirement Study). So if your long project is solitary and you're prone to rumination, consider adding a social component.

What I'd actually do

If you're convinced that long projects are worth it, here's my concrete recommendation: Start a 6-month project that has a visible, physical outcome and a skill you can practice deliberately. Not a 30-day challenge. Not a weekend kit. Something that will take you at least 100 hours and force you to learn.

For me, that would be building a piece of furniture from rough lumber. Why? Because it checks every box: high skill ceiling (joinery, finishing), clear feedback (does the drawer slide?), personal meaning (a table you'll use daily), and a tangible result. Plus, woodworking was one of the crafts linked to a 45% lower risk of MCI in the Mayo Clinic study. I'd set aside two evenings a week, keep a log of what I learned, and—crucially—find a community online or at a local guild to share progress and get feedback. That social layer isn't optional for me; it's what will keep me going when the project gets hard.

If woodworking isn't your thing, pick something else with the same structure: pottery, a large-scale model, a garden, learning an instrument. The specific activity matters less than the commitment to duration and deliberate practice. The research is clear that the deepest wellbeing benefits—purpose, flow, cognitive protection—accrue over months and years, not days. So stop looking for the next quick craft. Start the long project you've been putting off. Your future self will thank you.
